Mrs. Mary Smith Hughes Obituary

Tucson, Arizona - Mary Smith Hughes, 75, of Tucson, Arizona, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on July 9, 2025, at her home, surrounded by cherished friends and her devoted husband, Don Perry Hughes. Born on November 30, 1949, in Everett, Washington, Mary lived a vibrant life marked by unwavering kindness, infectious joy, and profound faith.

Mary graduated from Everett High School in 1968 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Western Washington University in 1972. She then relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she built a rich life for over four decades. Her professional journey began at GTE in Marina del Rey, where she forged lifelong friendships with colleagues. Later, embracing her role as a homemaker, Mary channeled her energy into volunteerism, leaving a lasting legacy in the community. As Chair of the Women's Auxiliary Guild at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, she played a pivotal role in introducing cutting-edge medical technology, all while cultivating deep, enduring bonds with those she served alongside.

A true adventurer at heart, Mary traveled the world, embracing every experience with enthusiasm and style. Renowned for her impeccable fashion sense, she was always the best-dressed guest at any gathering and orchestrated parties with flawless elegance. Her radiant smile, warm humor, and boundless generosity brightened every room she entered. Mary gave selflessly—often anticipating needs before they were voiced—extending her compassion to strangers, coworkers, friends, and family alike.

Above all, Mary was a pillar of love in her family. She shared nearly 50 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Don, and was an extraordinary mother to her son, Bradford Grice Hughes, whom she nurtured, guided, and celebrated with boundless pride until her final days. A cherished daughter, she was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and William Smith, and her brother, Robert Smith. She is survived by her sibling and oldest friend, Betty Jo Petosa (née Smith) with whom she was closest throughout her life. Mary was also a treasured aunt to numerous nieces and nephews scattered across the nation, from Florida to Maryland, Michigan, and Washington.

Deeply rooted in her Christian faith, Mary volunteered at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Westchester, California, teaching Sunday School with a love and joy that reflected her soul's essence. She embodied her beliefs through daily acts of grace, touching countless lives with her gentle spirit. As the Apostle Paul wrote, she fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith—and now awaits her crown of righteousness from the Lord.

A Celebration of Life will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity of your choice, honoring Mary's spirit of giving. As she would say, "May God bless you."
